Christmas comes early for Nathan Lukey

Two days after Christmas last year, on December 27th, Nathan Lukey suffered a tragic accident that changed his life in a split second, leaving him with a spinal cord injury. Immediately he was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne where he spent nearly a week in intensive care. He was then transferred to the Austin Hospital for spinal surgery.

Nathan Lukey in rehab“After a hard day’s work I came home to have a swim and that’s where my new life began,” explains Nathan.

“I remember coming to after knocking myself out and feeling completely helpless to move, I managed to call for help and was pulled from the pool. I remember my mum holding my head still as I asked to pull my legs out of the pool because I was cold, to which she responded ‘they’re not in the pool.’

“Paramedics came and I was airlifted to the Alfred hospital for the next 6 days and then to the Austin for surgery. I remember after surgery feeling like I could barely breathe after having my breathing tube removed.

“I had completely smashed my c6 vertebrae which caused damage to my spinal cord which unfortunately causes paralysis. Feeling helpless in a bed with no movement at all wondering if this was to be my story, and me forever.”

Thankfully, following intensive rehab, Nathan has since been able to return home and lives with his parents in Harrietville but continues to travel weekly to Melbourne for two days of intensive and expensive rehab on a long road to recovery.

Whilst he remains in a wheelchair and working towards improving the natural recovery of his hands, his future remains positive.

Bright Brewery is delighted to announce that this year’s special Christmas In July fundraising event on Sunday 22nd July will help support Nathan’s recovery.

Surrounded by snow and winter festivities, Bright Brewery’s annual Christmas in July fundraiser will bring together the local community for a fun afternoon of games and entertainment to make Nathan’s recovery that little bit easier. Come along to enjoy canape service, all day entertainment including live music, games, festive decorations and an auction of donated produce and goodies from across North East Victoria, conducted by local auctioneer Jason Reid.

Bright Brewery will be approaching local businesses in the hope that the generosity of the community will help Nathan with his ongoing medical support and physical therapy. Any donation that you can make towards the running of the event or the fundraising auctions and prizes will be truly appreciated.

Any businesses, services or operators interested in contributing to the fundraising at this event – please contact Kim Huet on 03 5755 1346 or via venue@brightbrewery.com.au

DARKER DAYS festival returns this winter

Darker Days midwinter festival – live the day, burn the night!

Bright Brewery is excited to announce that the second annual DARKER DAYS festival will set Bright alight on Saturday 30th June 2018.

DARKER DAYS 2018 midwinter festival Bright VictoriaCentred around dark and winter beers produced by the brewers of Victoria’s High Country, DARKER DAYS is a showcase of local produce and activities that celebrate winter in Victoria’s Alpine valleys.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this family friendly festival will bring together local producers, operators, entertainers, beer lovers and families to toast the season and welcome the return of lighter days following the Winter Solstice.

We had such a fantastic response to the first DARKER DAYS last year and we love providing the opportunity to showcase the region’s best dark and winter beers while surrounded by a festival that turns winter dreariness into a fun, fire-filled and delicious day out.

We learned a great deal from our first crack at running a festival last year, including the need to provide more food and warming drinks, more fire and… just more of everything! So, we started planning early to ensure that DARKER DAYS is bigger and better this year, adding new vendors while also maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a mid-winter festival surrounded by mountains, fire, food, stories and song.

Some exciting additions to this year’s festival include Backwoods Distilling Co, the new whisky producers from nearby Yackandanda, and the crew from Asylum Ghost Tours in Beechworth who will telling ghost stories around the fires and leading a unique ghost tour around the haunted streets of Bright.

Confirmed for DARKER DAYS 2018: Black Dog Brewery, Blizzard Brewing Co, Bridge Road Brewers, Bright Brewery, King River Brewing, Rutherglen Brewery, Social Bandit Brewing Co,  Sweetwater Brewing Co, Alpine Cider, Billy Button Wines, Reed & Co Distillery, Backwoods Distilling Co, Tolpuddle Goat Cheese & Farm Foods, King Valley Popcorn, The Wingvan, live music, kids activities, Asylum Ghost Tours, a big bonfire and more!

FULL FESTIVAL LINE-UP NOW AVAILABLE HERE!

DARKER DAYS will also mark the 2018 launch of Bright Brewery’s annual winter brew, Stubborn Russian Imperial Stout, and will see the return of our other limited release winter favourite, Black Diamond India Black Ale.

DARKER DAYS is a community-minded festival flowing with locally produced beers, wine, cider and spirits, plus warming foods, live music, kids entertainment and winter activities. After the sun sets, Bright Brewery’s riverside lands will truly come alive with a spectacular ceremonial burning of a giant wooden structure in the shape of the brewery’s logo.

The festival will run from 12noon to 9pm on Saturday 30th June at 123 Great Alpine Road, Bright (aka Bright Brewery’s vacant block), with entry a gold coin donation for the local CFA.

So, come gather around the fires to make damper and to roast marshmallows and chestnuts. Hear campfire tales and maybe even a ghost story or two. It will be a full day of mid-winter mountain fun!

BRIGHT EASTER EGG HUNT

We’ll be holding an Easter Egg hunt for the kids at 11:00am on Easter Sunday, 1st April 2018.

All welcome, come along and enjoy the fun!

NEW BEER

Fill yourself with HOPS this Easter by enjoying our 2018 Hop Harvest Ale.

Each year during the hop harvest we select a unique variety of hop from the nearby Rostrevor Hop Gardens and set about showcasing its flavour in this “wet-hopped” beer. The 2017 edition of our Hop Harvest Ale reveals the fresh green hop and soft fruit flavours in an easy drinking, crisp and refreshing Australian style pale ale. A light body of pale malts allow the hop flavours to shine through, which a touch of wheat malt to fill out the mouthfeel. It’s available now, on tap at Bright Brewery.

EASTER WEEKEND LIVE MUSIC

Come to Bright Brewery, grab a beer, and kick back on Easter Sunday afternoon with a laidback session of acoustic folk and bluegrass featuring Water From The Well.

Water From The Well is a pair of musicians who stumbled into each other’s musical arms through a mutual crazy love of bluegrass and the banjo… Freya Hanly, the veteran lone songwriter, meets Jason Fados, banjo player who is leading a not-so-secret double life as a rock, funk, blues and soul guitarist. To put your finger on the genre of this unique collaboration will depend on which song you catch – at times too fast moving to even see the fingers involved in the banjo antics, at others times so unhurried, there is simply no need to pin it down. Somewhere between folk and bluegrass, images of a stream rolling over rocks will be followed by infectious driving numbers filled with cheek, all engulfed by Jason’s sassy banjo and Freya’s distinctively elegant voice. Their panoramic song writing explores fresh musical and emotional territory that will drop you off in one realm of sound and pick you up in another.

Catch this free live gig from 2pm – 5pm on Easter Sunday, 1st April 2018.

Best Bits of Bright calendar

Body positive calendar raises money for mental health support

Bright Brewery 2018 calendar - ScottYou can now enjoy The Best Bits of Bright… year-round. Bright Brewery’s staff, in all their shapes and sizes, have created their own body-loving calendar in order to raise a donation for research and outreach related to anxiety and depression.

The recent festive holiday and new year’s period is often a time to come together with family and friends to reflect on the past year and indulge in our favourite things. For many, it is also a very difficult time as they battle the pressures and perceptions of body image, anxiety and depression. While “diet” is an all too common new year’s resolution, Bright Brewery’s team prefers the call to action to “get outdoors, get active”.

At Bright Brewery we are active, sustainable and authentic. We enjoy active lifestyles that revolve around Bright’s awesome outdoor activities… and yet we don’t look like fitness models. We hope this calendar can show that strong bodies and lives come in many forms.
Best Bits of Bright Brewery calendar

The calendar features Bright Brewery’s staff enjoying some of the amazing activities and scenery around their home town of Bright.

We hope this special project will open up positive conversation about body image and mental health, while also showcasing some of the best outdoor activities and attractions of Bright.

The calendar is available to purchase for $30 from Bright Brewery’s bar and website shop.

Profits from this calendar will be donated to beyondblue in support of their ongoing work to equip Australians with the knowledge, skills and support to protect their mental health.

Mental health has been a recent focus for Bright Brewery, as both the hospitality and brewing industries increasingly recognise the need to help support and manage the mental health of staff in these high-pressure work places. Bright Brewery’s management team completed timely Mental Health First Aid training and accreditation prior to Christmas.

Bright Brewery's senior team completing Mental Health First Aid training with John from Hot Response This will enable the brewery’s senior staff to identify and offer initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Bright Brewery team wishes all a happy new year.
